I am being ripped off by a magazine company.?
Basically I get seven magazines a month through a company who gives discounts on subscriptions. Times are tough now and I recently got my work hours cut, and have had to cut back. I tried to cancel but the company said I have to stick by my order of a one year subscription which does not end until march, and that they will continue to do the monthly direct withdrawals from my bank account.
Here’s what I’m considering: I simply close the bank account. Then they have nothing to charge? Could I do this?
I mean, I don’t think they’d have a case to sue me because if I stop paying them, they obviously stop sending the magazines, and if they stop sending the magazines, then they are no longer providing a service to get payment for. Plus it is my understanding that only thinks like loans and credit card bills effect your credit.
I don’t think they are going to sue you for the price of those magazines! It would cost them more out of THEIR pocket to do so!
What I would do, is, call them up one more time, and ask to talk to a supervisor, don’t talk to a rep. Get name and write down dates that you have contacted them. IF the supervision is NOT cooperative, DON’T, whatever you do get NASTY! People loose thier job every day. Just hang up, then sit down and WRITE to them, telling them of your circumstances, and that you have tried verbally to cancel the mags. ONE THING you MUST DO, is make copies of any correspondence you send to them! This done, go talk to your bank, and explain what is going on. Mine gives me advise all the time. Closing your bank account might stop them from drawing money out, but also do the same to any other creditor you may have, AND don’t forget, if you have a direct deposit on your pay check. Think about this before you do anything. My bank has actually CALLED companies for me, and the automatic payments stopped. If your bank can’t get them to stop, or THEY refuse to help you, THEN I would close the account ASAP, and open one at another bank. I know this seems like a lot of work, but what you will be doing, is covering your butt. They can’t say you are skip the country, so to speak. I had a subscription to a magazine for one year. I paid my dues, but the mags keep coming! IF they send me another bill for same, I have a cancelled check for the full amount for that year, so, it’s their problem, if they keep sending me the mag! Right! How would they be able to take money out of your bank if you had completely lost your job!?? They can’t get blood out of a stone!! I wouldn’t feel bad about all this, there are millions of other people in the rocky boat along with you! LOL! You COULD collect all the mags, and send them back to them, so they can’t say you are sttealing them! Good Luck!
